Business leaders can no longer expect employees and others to hang on to every word they utter. Today’s audiences are easily distracted, want to be entertained and are likely to multitask during a presentation. What you say has to be more interesting than the listeners’ emails and text messages. Additionally, audiences judge you against what they saw on television the night before. In short, they expect you to perform brilliantly. Welcome to the new world!

Unfortunately, far too many individuals have sub-par communication skills. They communicate using comfortable but outdated and self-defeating techniques. Individuals who can communicate clearly, concisely, charismatically – face-to-face, on video, one-on-one, to large groups and small, in both formal and informal situations – will get others to listen to, understand and act on what they say. They will also have lots of job security. And they will likely occupy the corner suite.
